Hours: 40 hours per week from Mon-Fri (7:00am-3:30pm)

Wage: $32.20/hour (PG20) plus 10% in lieu of benefits and vacation

This 113-year-old, non-profit organization has an annual operating budget of over $70 million dollars and generates revenue through four activity streams:  the 15-day annual summer Fair and winter Fair which average more than 700,000 people annually, Playland amusement park which welcomes 400,000 guests annually including Fright Nights, and a busy year-round portfolio of events including concerts, trade shows and film, cultural and community events.  In total we bring over 2 million people through the site each year. We are seeking a diligent and hard-working individual that has a passion for the Events and the Pacific National Exhibition (PNE). The Icemaker Lead will work in the Facilities & Maintenance Department and under the direction of the Director, Facilities & Maintenance. They will be responsible for maintaining ice surfaces as well as general public buildings on site. The Icemaker Lead will operate tools and equipment related to ice maintenance and custodial duties. What will you do this year?

In your role as an Icemaker Lead, your primary accountabilities will be to:

  • Perform custodial duties such as cleaning dressing rooms, showers, washrooms, seating areas, and general public buildings on assigned shifts.
  • Operate a forklift, ice resurfacing machines and other equipment associated with custodian duties.
  • Ability to change propane on the ice resurfacing machines.
  • Operate edger, spudder as well as repair (slush) ice surfaces.
  • Clean and maintain ice surfaces for hockey, speed skating, figure skating and specialty events; including make/build, seal and paint ice surface as required.
  • Ability to do minor paint touch-ups on facility to maintain world class look.
  • Replace and clean board glass when necessary.
  • Inspect repair and paint nets, install new netting on goal posts as required.
  • Install and remove ice logos.
  • Set up for pre-game, post-game and between period events as necessary.
  • Install board signs.
  • Complete ice thickness check sheets, ice resurfacing machines checks, and logbooks.
  • Prepare ice surface for changeover.
  • Rink board and gate repairs including advertising teardown and installation.
  • Ability to perform blade changes on the ice resurfacing machines.
  • Ability to repair seating within the facility.
  • Develop training documents and guides for staff.
  • Develop check lists and timeframes for cleaning for ice makers.
  • In-charge of overseeing and scheduling shifts for staff.
  • Report deficiencies to Chief Engineer.
  • Maintain a safe and clean work environment.
  • Must comply with company and department policies and procedures.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

 

 What else?

  • Must have successful completion of Grade 12.
  • Must have a minimum of one (1) year of previous supervisory experience.
  • Ice Facility Operator Certificate; or Fifth Class Power Engineering Certificate. Preference will go to candidates with Fifth class power engineering certificate.
  • Must be capable of lifting 50 LBS
  • Must have a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s license and provide an up-to-date Driver's Abstract confirming a clean driving record. Must have previous experience with an edger and spudder and sealing ice surfaces.
  • Must have previous experience with making/building ice surfaces for various sports events, such as hockey, speed skating and figure skating preferred.
  • Ability to operate a forklift and other equipment pertinent to custodial duties is recommended.
  • Knowledge of and ability to follow WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System).
  • Ability to enforce rules and regulations of governing the operation of the arena during user group sessions.
  • Ability to learn and perform new processes and procedures to maintain operating standards as the arena industry changes.
  • Must be capable of working at heights and lifting heavy materials up to WCB restrictions; and physically able to work in awkward positions.
  • Knowledge of the hazards and proper safety precautions related to the work performed.
  • Must be capable of reading, writing, and speaking English for the purposes of written or oral instructions and documentation of work.
  • Must have the ability to work independently under specified time frames and deadlines.
  • Must have a flexible schedule with availability for day, evening and weekend shifts as required.
  • Experience operating an ice resurfacing machine and taking compressor readings is considered an asset.
  • Ability to communicate with patrons courteously and effectively.
  • Ability to work without supervision on an assigned shift.
  • Will report into the Chief Engineer of the Pacific National Exhibition.
  • Candidates must undergo a Criminal Record Check.
